100 days to go as Mackay gears up to celebrate 150 years
A specially designed logo has been unveiled in preparation for Mackay’s 150th celebrations in 2012.
Mackay is celebrating its sesquicentenary – it was gazetted in 1862 – and the community is being urged to be part of the commemorations during a 12 month celebratory program.
Mayor Col Meng, who today launched the logo, said branding Mackay’s 150 was a symbolic step towards engaging the community to recognise our past, our people and our stories.
“Council is keen to drive the celebrations and we hope every business, community and charity group will use the branding in all its material next year,” he said.
The Mackay 150 logo will be included on the official council letterhead during 2012 and would be featured on the council website and at all council-organised events.
“The graphic designer tells me the colours are an abstract representation of our unique area with references to the cane, river and natural beauty,” he said.
Cr Meng said the visually appealing logo was produced in-house to minimise costs and he commended staff and the Mackay 150 committee for its efforts.
“There have been a lot of significant changes in the past 150 years and next year we intend having a great time marking this momentous birthday,” he said.
Mackay Sesquicentennial committee chair Cr Wendy Cameron said there would be a series of events to celebrate and recognise our heritage.
“We really encourage the community to get involved because the program will include artistic, cultural and historical events, art exhibitions and much more,” she said.
Cr Cameron chairs a monthly committee meeting which included members from Education Queensland, Mackay Tourism, the Historical Society, council officers and respected historian Berenice Wright.
“The committee has a real focus on exploring our history to allow the community to gain a stronger understanding of our past,” Cr Cameron said.
She encouraged groups, conducting an event next year, to visit the council website and submit it on the event calendar
“Support from the business community will be paramount in delivering a range of quality events to mark the special occasion,” she said.
