Violent act taken out on the region’s historic Leichhardt Tree

A reckless act of vandalism has caused damage to one of Mackay’s most historical assets, the Leichhardt Tree located at Bluewater Quay, River Street.

Engineering Services Director Stuart Holley said police had been notified about the damage after it was reported to council earlier this week.

“The tree has suffered significant damage from what appears to be caused by slicing or hacking with a sharp object such as an axe,” Mr Holley said.

“If the tree continues to be vandalised and becomes any worse it will be effectively ring barked which results in the death of wood tissues causing the tree to deteriorate,” he said.

“Police are investigating and the area will continue to be monitored for suspicious activity,’ he said.

If anyone notices any unusual behavior occurring at the Bluewater Quay or near the Leichhardt tree they are asked to contact Police immediately.

As a result of the vandalism, council is currently sourcing quotes to fence and enclose the Leichhardt Tree to ensure this historic icon is protected and preserved.

The Leichhardt tree appears in some of the earliest images of Mackay and was used in the early days as a place to tie up the old sailing ships before the wharves were built.

It has always been considered an historic landmark, and in 1992 was given a National Trust listing.

Anyone with information on the vandalism should contact council on 1300 MACKAY (622 529) or Mackay Police on 4968 3444.
