Will the trees in your backyard withstand a cyclone?

Mackay Regional Council is urging residents to assess the trees in their backyard to make sure they can withstand the summer storm-cyclone season.

Council recently removed a large fig tree from Mackay’s Post Office Park because it was structurally unsound from damage sustained during Cyclone Ului.

Mayor Col Meng said many large trees in the backyard may start showing signs of distress and it’s important that residents check the trees to make sure they can withstand strong winds and heavy rain.

“In the event of a storm, trees that are cracking or weak may become dangerous missiles, damaging property and possibly injuring people,” he said

“Checking the structure of trees should be part of your normal checklist in preparation for the cyclone season.”

Council is also urging residents to check their roofs, clean out gutters and make sure all building structures around their home and in the community are safe and secure.

“If a building structure on your property is well worn or has not been approved i.e. carport, garden shed or pool, it may not meet the high standards that are required in a cyclone zone and therefore be a danger to the community.”

“‘If we as a community can start securing all structures and report those that look unsafe we will be helping to reduce the possible damage and injury caused if a cyclone was to hit.” Cr Meng said.
