Secrets of the Pioneer: A Photographic Exhibition by David Phillips, Mitch Galletly and John Robertson.
Lagoons Gallery and Café September 7 to October 2, 2011
Secrets of the Pioneer Exhibition photographers have been long-time residents of Mackay and thus the Pioneer River is part of their everyday existence. This project aims not only to discover scenes that may otherwise go unnoticed but, it is a celebration of the peacefulness and power of the River.
The photographers, David, Mitch and John began their project photographing the Pioneer River around 12 months ago. Both fortunately and unfortunately the Mackay area has had an abundance of rain during that time – fortunate as the river has remained torrent, unfortunate as the rain has hindered a number of attempts to get out there and photograph it.
David, Mitch and John have endeavoured to capture the fickle mix of change and stability and to show a past that the river still holds within its banks.
They have enjoyed discovering the secrets of the Pioneer River, and through their exhibition they hope to reveal her beauty, the water, the light and her many moods with you.
Cost: Free Contact Maya Harrison at the Botanic Gardens 4952 7300 or email botanic@mackay.qld.gov.au The Lagoons Gallery and Cafe is open Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 3pm and on Weekends from 9am to 4pm. "Night Crossing" by David Phillips is the featured photograph.

Landcare Day in the Gardens September 11, 2011 From 9am to 2pm Botanic Gardens Tropical Sun Lawn“Kids… Make a Difference… in Your Backyard”
Landcare Day in the Gardens provides opportunities for everyone to showcase different ways individuals (young and old) can conserve, protect and enhance our environment / world.
The theme is to engage children (of all ages) using fun, interesting activities on sustainability practices and environmental themes.
We are also promoting ‘KIDS TEACHING KIDS’ including showcasing the amazing contributions school children already make to our environment. We hope these ideas will then be used by children and their families in their own backyards.
We would love to have you and your organisation join us at Landcare Day in the Gardens. We are asking organisations and individuals involved in Landcare Day, to develop a display that showcases their own activities, and in addition provide activities/displays suited for engaging and inspiring children and their families to learn new ways of looking after the planet by making changes in their own homes and backyards. For example, create an interactive or tactile display, run games or activities that children will enjoy being involved in that will have an environmental message.
Some activities already planned include water weed identification, bird watching surveys, no dig gardening, creating flowers from recycled materials, sustainable fishing game, the water drop game, animal displays, composting workshops, mini-beasts, recycled art. Reduce your carbon footprint by growing a native plant, purchased from SGAP (Society for Growing Australian Plants) Annual Plant Sale. Please confirm your participation or for more information contact Maya Harrison at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens on 4952 7300 or 0409 750 453 by August 27.
