Right to Information

About Right to Information

Through the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI), the Queensland Government has made a commitment to provide the community with greater access to information held by the Government and its agencies (including councils), unless on balance it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information.

Mackay Regional Council is making it easy for the community to access the information it holds, including policies, reports, public registers and documents relating to our decisions.

Much of the information we hold about our services, activities and business operations is available through our Publication Scheme.  If you are looking for information about council we encourage you to look for it in the Publication Scheme first.

Right to Information Act 2009

 About Information Privacy

The RTI Act is complemented by the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act), which provides a right to access and amend your personal information.

The primary object of the IP Act is to provide for:

  • The fair collection and handling in the public sector environment of personal information; and
  • A right of access to, and amendment of, personal information in the government’s possession or under the government’s control unless, on balance, it is contrary to the public interest to give the access or allow the information to be amended.

Accessing our information

It is the government’s intention that by proactively making information available, formal applications for information under the Right to Information Act will be made as a last resort.

If you are looking for information about how Mackay Regional Council operates, we encourage you to look for it in our Publication Scheme.

Another source of information is Council's Disclosure Log. The Disclosure Log describes the documents that have been provided in response to requests for information under the RTI since 1 July 2009. Once released, these documents are publicly available.

If you have been unable to find the information you are looking for on our web site, please contact us and we will see if we can release it to without the need to make a formal application.

Publication Scheme

The Right to Information Act requires council to publish a Publication Scheme setting out information we hold which is routinely available to the public.

Our Publication Scheme has been developed to give the community greater access to information we hold. It has also been prepared in response to Government’s review of the freedom of information laws with an approach to proactive disclosure.

Our information has been grouped and accessible through the following categories:

About council
Our services
Our finances
Our priorities
Our decisions
Our policies
Our lists

You can download any of the information and documents contained in this Publication Scheme free of charge. If you wish to access any of the information or documents in a hard copy, a photocopying fee (20c per page for black and white photocopy on A4 size paper), may occur.

Disclosure log

The Disclosure Log lists documents which have been released through previous applications for information under the RTI Act. Once released to the applicant, the Act allows documents which don't contain information contrary to the public interest to be made publicly available.

If you wish to access these documents please contact us.
