Mackay Four Level Road Hierarchy

As part of the development of the Mackay City Planning Scheme 2006, a four level road hierarchy was adopted by council. The Mackay Four Level Road Hierarchy Report details  the appropriate hierarchy for roads throughout Mackay.

The report enables council to apply consistent policies and standards throughout the urban and rural road network in relation to meeting the following objectives:-

  • A classification of roadways according to their functional and/or management objectives
  • Performance criteria to ensure that the functional and management objectives of each element of hierarchy can be achieved
  • Flexibility to enable the classification of an existing road network according to the hierarchy structure
  • Flexibility to enable the incorporation of new elements into the road network whilst maintaining the integrity of the hierarchy
  • Provision for road network planning to be integrated with land use planning by its adoption into the planning instruments under the Sustainable Planning Act 2009.

The report consists of a complete Road Hierarchy Guideline, desirable performance criteria and design standards.

A series of maps also identify the road hierarchy classification for all existing roads/streets and the higher order proposed roads/streets.  Note that these maps have since the development of the report in 2003 been updated.  Refer to MiMAPS (and select the Planning and Land Use Maps theme) for current road hierarchy designations:
