Development Summit 2011
Thursday, 30 June 2011 saw the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC) host Mackay Regional Council’s Development Summit 2011. With just under 200 attendees from a diverse range of industry sectors present including development and construction companies, financial institutions, real estate agencies, town planning consultants, mining entities, charity organisations and a variety of government and service groups the day was an opportunity for the Queensland Government and council to meet with the region’s current and prospective stakeholders as we develop strategies to encourage and foster Mackay’s intensely expanding population.
This event was centred on the release of the Queensland Government’s Draft Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday Regional Plan, which was delivered personally by the Department of Local Government and Planning employees David Rowland (Director of Regional Planning and Planning Services in Growth Management Queensland), Damian Pearson (Regional Director of Central Region) and Katrina Clark (Manager of the Mackay Region).
In addition, Mackay Regional Council presented an initial response to the Draft Regional Plan and information on the development of the Mackay Region 200k Planning Scheme. -The new planning scheme will address many of the fundamental points outlined in the Draft Regional Plan and will specifically focus on initiatives that will proactively manage the projected population boom of the next 20 years where more than 200,000 residents are expected to live, play and work within the Mackay region.
As a unique treat, Mr Stephen Moore from Roberts Day Town Planning Consultants then spoke to the lively audience on Contemporary Planning Principles. This presentation was very well received and highlighted the need for all stakeholders to work in unison using progressive models to successfully accommodate such projected growth whilst remaining prosperous, sustainable and with minimal impact to the natural environments our inimitable region is famous for.
There was also an opportunity for participants to offer feedback and their own particular priority points via a plenary session that council are now collating, reviewing and will use as we, together with the Queensland Government, produce and adopt a revised-version of the Regional Plan strategy.
Mackay Regional Council wishes to thank all who attended the summit. For any further information or to offer any additional feedback, please do not hesitate to email summit@mackay.qld.gov.au .
