In August 2007, Federal Minister for vocational and Further Education, Andrew Robb, announced the winners of the 2007 Minister's Awards for Excellence for Employers of Australian Apprentices.  Mackay Regional Council took out the Central Queensland Category for its solid completion rate and site specific program for apprentices.

Council's Learning and Development program within Human Resources is designed to offer its employees support throughout their employment in the way of training, professional development and succession planning.

Programs offered by Learning and Development:

Work experience

Work experience is available to those who studying within educational institutions or linked with a job placement organisation.

Some compulsary minimum qualifications do apply before placement within certain programs:

Infrastructure (works), Horticulture, Mackay Water require:

  • General construction safety (Blue) card
  • Traffic control ticket
  • Car licence

Aquatic Facilities, Libraries, Mackay Entertainment Centre, Artspace, Community Development require:

  • Working with Children Blue Card

School students wishing to arrange a work placement are encourageed to discuss their work experience options with the School Vocational Officer or contact Mackay Region School Industry Links on (07) 4940 3408.

Vacation employment

Mackay Regional Council endeavours to support tertiary students in gaining valuable practical experience to enhance studies and career options.  Upon student request, council provides vacation paid employment within:

  • Planning
  • Civil engineering
  • Social Sciences
  • Human Resources
  • Design
  • Building certifying
  • Accounting
  • Corporate communications

Placements are offered all year round however intake is dependent on resourcing. Council offers a challenging, dynamic work environment where professionals take the time to coach and mentor students.

Graduate program

Cadetships

Council is increasing its number of cadetships over the next years in an attempt to develop more professionals within the region.  Curently council employs cadets within:

  • Design
  • Accounting
  • Surveying

Under the cadetship program employees are offered:

  1. 100 per cent reimbursement of tertiary module costs upon the successful completion of each module
  2. Paid release time to attend lectures, tuturials, internship periods and examination
  3. Incremental salary conditions
  4. Valuable practical experience
