Coastal management
Beach Protection Crew
Council employs a beach protection crew to undertake coastal managment and protection work in Mackay.
The team undertakes a variety of tasks including access track construction and maintenance, swim enclosure maintenance, protective fencing, weed control and revegetation.
Recent projects include:
Swan Street vehicular ladder
The Beach Protection Crew recently consturcted a sand ladder at the end of Swan St. This site is a popular boat launching spot, and the timber ladder will help to minimise disturbance caused by people driving on the beach to launch their boats.
Swim enclosure repairs
Council maintains four swimming enclosures in the Mackay area. The structures require periodic maintenance, particularly after storms and extreme tides.
Access tracks and fencing
Coastal vegetation plays an important role in protecting and stablising beaches and dunes, as well as providing important habitat for wildlife. Fencing can help to protect coastal vegetation by limiting access to sensitive areas and minimising damage caused by trampling and unauthorised vehicle access. Council has an ongoing program to fence coastal vegetation and provide designated walkways and access tracks.
Coastal Management Plan
Council is currently preparing a Coastal Management Plan for Mackay, which will detail the actions required for sustainable management of our coastal areas.
When finalised, the plan will be available to download from this site.
