Community Environmental Projects

Council is keen to encourage community involvement in the management of public land in Mackay.  In a new initiative, funding from the Natural Environment Levy will be available each year, to encourage partnerships between Council and the community and provide opportunities for the sustainable management of public land.  Council welcomes submission from the community regarding ideas for potential projects.  Successful projects will involve a partnership between the community and Council to achieve project outcomes.

Projects must be undertaken on public land in Mackay and be of benefit to the local environment and community.  Some examples of potential projects include: developing a brochure or interpretive signage about the natural environment, weed control or planting projects in a local habitat area, support for workshops, field trips or demonstration projects focusing on local environmental issues.

Applications can be made until the end of February 2008.  A second funding round will be available in August. Project costs can be between $3,000 and $15,000.  A total of $25,000 is available.

For more information, or to talk about your ideas for a potential project, contact Lisa from the Natural Environment Program on 4955 8664.
