Image of the Month

Each month we will be featuring an image from the library's collection on Picture Queensland.

Crowd gathered for ANZAC day ceremony, River Street, Mackay, 1930.  A large crowd gathers at River Street during ANZAC Day celebrations 1930, the first to be held at the new cenotaph on the riverbank.  The cenotaph was completed in November 1929.

Heritage Collection

The library’s Heritage Collection, located in the Carmel Daveson Research Room at Mackay City Library, houses an extensive range of historical and current resources relating to the development of the Mackay Region.

The collection includes books, photographs, maps, original materials and collections, newspapers on microfilm, newspaper cuttings, family history resources, videos, DVDs, and pamphlets.

The Carmel Daveson Research Room is open Monday – Thursday, and on Saturdays, during usual library opening times. (Closed on Fridays)

Access to The Daily Mercury newspaper

The Mackay City Library holds The Mackay Daily Mercury in hardcopy from 2007 to present.  Newspapers prior to 2007 can be accessed on microfilm or microfiche in the Carmel Daveson Research Room.  Microfilm content can be printed or saved to USB.

The National Library of Australia provides full-text online access to The Daily Mercury from March 2007 to present through their Factiva database subscription.  A free online resources card must be obtained to access this database.  Click here for further details.

The Mackay City Library also holds all copies of The Pioneer News and The MidWeek.

History Bits in Kits

The library’s History Bits in Kits resources are a series of themed local history resources designed to assist schools; teachers; local historical groups, societies and museums, in promoting the history and heritage of the Mackay region. Each kit contains 10 photographs relevant to the theme, a power-point presentation on CD, and an accompanying information booklet.
