Sarina Water Recycling Facility
The relocation of the Sarina Wastewater Treatment Plant is a significant project that will provide better protection of the environment and allow for a more robust wastewater treatment system for the Sarina area.
Background
The existing Sarina Wastewater Treatment Plant is located near the Sarina township and residential dwellings. The plant is approximately 40 years old and uses old, out of date technology.
Current legislation by the Department of Environment and Resource Management now places more stringent requirements on wastewater systems.
In order to meet these requirements and to cater for potential growth in the area, a new wastewater treatment plant will be constructed. The existing plant will eventually be decommissioned.
Location
A parcel of land located to the east of the QR rail line is the proposed location for the new site.
Important Facts
- The new treatment plant will be built to cater to a population of 7000 people. The design will also allow for further expansion.
- There will be approximately 4km of new rising main to the new site.
- The Biltoft Street pump station will also be upgraded as part of the project.
Projected Outcomes
- Improved quality of effluent being released to the environment.
- Increased system capacity to cater for expected growth and development in the area.
- The new system will have significant improvements and be more reliable.
- Modern treatment has less impact.
- New site has less impact on the Sarina township.
