Understanding your water bill
The below Q&A is designed to help you understand your water bill and how to monitor your water usage.
Quick links:
What period does my water bill cover?
Water notices issued in May cover the period of water used between August the previous year to March of this year. If it was a hot summer your water usage may have been higher resulting in this bill being greater than the previous period.
Water notices issued in November cover the cooler months of February through to August when less water may be used.
How can I access my water bill?
You can sign up to eNotices to view all payment notices, including your most recent water bill. Go to mackay.qld.gov.au/enotices to sign up and view your notices.
Can I view and track how much water I use?
Yes, sign up to council’s free myh2o website (myh2o.qld.gov.au) to monitor your usage and be notified of any water leaks or higher than normal water usage at your property. This website can be used by property owners and tenants.
You will receive a link via email to confirm your registration, this needs to be confirmed within 72 hours or the link will expire.
If you have any questions about signing up, please call us on 1300 622 529.
Why is my bill higher than my last bill?
Your bill may be higher than your last bill due to the time of the year. For example, a bill issued in May is for the hotter time of year, our summer months when more water may be used. The previous bill issued in November was for the period February through to August, which are generally cooler months.
How do I know if I have a water leak?
You can conduct a water leak test by following these steps:
1. Read your meter and record the litre figures.
2. Do not use any water for a number of hours - you may like to do this overnight.
3. Re-read your meter and if there is a difference in the litre dial reading then a leak exists.
4. If you’ve checked everything (irrigation, toilet, taps) and there is still movement in the litre dials, contact a plumber to help you locate the leak.
How are the water charges calculated?
Water usage is charged out at the below rates:
- Tariff 1 (0-150 kiloliters) per half year $1.97/kl
- Tariff 2 (over 150 kilolitres) per half year $2.91/kl
Council's annual water charge (included in rates notices) is $398.10.
